The M.Sc./M.A. in Interactive Media is a 12-months intensive course designed specifically for graduates who are interested in pursuing studies that combine technological competence with design/artistic endeavour. The convergence of computer and media technologies offers unique opportunities for art, design, new media and computer science graduates to exploit their potentials in new areas (experience, interaction and participatory design, internet of things, social media and virtual reality, mobile and physical computing), across a wide range of activities, such as digital multimedia, software development, interactive installation, human-centred research and education.

This course offers students an in-depth exploration of the technological avenues available today, and backs this up with interaction design methodologies and a thorough examination of the associated aesthetic developments and potential pitfalls. Students also have individual workstations in a dedicated lab with high-spec computers with a wide range of media authoring software from Adobe, Apple and a number of Open Source tools. Students on this course also have access to our recording studio, a pool of high-quality professional video cameras, and a range of electronic sensors.

One of the major stumbling blocks for creative people wishing to engage in high-level multimedia authoring and interactivity is the hurdle of computer programming. As the course is in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, students receive excellent tuition in the fundamentals of programming, more specialised modules are also offered. In fact, there is often a crossover in interests as students discover new talents in previously unknown areas. Students will also be exposed to a series of interaction design methods and techniques from members of the Interaction Design Centre. Past students have become interaction designers, usability experts, teachers or remained artists but with a digital edge to their work. There is currently a substantial shortfall of graduates in the area of interactive media.
